M440: Techniques for the Rapid Evaluation of Data/Statistics in Rainstorm Spring 2020 (May. 30 - 31, 2020)
We are all, regardless of our areas of interest/expertise, bombarded with statistics daily. Due to this immense influx of data, we often spend less than 10 seconds evaluating a particular statistic. These quickly-formed evaluations, although often of trivial consequence, are at times of critical importance, altering how hospital patients are diagnosed or where government funding is allocated. Therefore, the ability to quickly and accurately evaluate statistics is crucial. In this course, we will go over a few case studies across various disciplines of common statistical evaluation pitfalls which can have severe consequences. In discussing these examples, we will develop techniques to avoid these pitfalls and make swift yet rational decisions based on statistical data.
