Brief Biographical Sketch:

Hi, I'm Courtney, and I'm an incoming junior at Duke! My two main loves are music and computer science, but i like to balance that out with my other hobbies, like reading, watching movies, and exploring the North Carolina wilderness. Let me know if you have any questions about high school and college, especially if you're thinking about applying to Duke. See you soon!

A678: Composing Music for Film in Rainstorm Spring 2021 (May. 15 - 16, 2021)
In this class, we'll be looking at the history of film scoring through the lens of genre (silent film, westerns, french new wave, animation, etc.) and musical style (classical, jazz, world music, minimalism, etc.). We'll also discuss important considerations when combining music with the moving image, such as choosing the right instruments, balancing sound and dialogue, and eliciting emotion from the audience. We'll finish off with a fun compositional exercise and look at some famous scenes and reimagine what we think the music could sound like. BEFORE COMING TO CLASS: Think about your favorite moments in film and tv and listen closely to the sound. Ask yourself --- how does the music and sound design contribute to the image, the story, and/or the movement of the scene? There's no pressure to come up with an "intellectual" response, just try to articulate how it makes you feel. It'll be our ice breaker. NOTE: No experience required, just a love of film and music. Happy listening!
