M890: An Algorithm a Day Keeps the Doctor Away? Ethical Consequences of AI in Healthcare in Rainstorm Winter 2022 (Jan. 29 - 30, 2022)
Google recently launched an app that uses AI to diagnose skin cancer. Human dermatologists notoriously underperform in detecting conditions when their patient's skin is dark, but will AI do better? To answer this question, we'll explore different notions of fairness, how they've been applied in algorithms, and how they perform in medical case studies. Whether you're interested in medicine, computer science, or something else entirely, this class will provide you with a framework to ethically analyze a variety of scenarios and understand the impact AI might have on healthcare.

M591: Speaking through Fractals: What Language and Trees Have in Common in Rainstorm Fall 2020 (Dec. 05 - 06, 2020)
What's the longest sentence you can come up with? What if that sentence only had one word? How do you know the sentence is grammatically correct? And what does all this have to do with fractals? In our class, you'll learn the one simple concept that explains how our minds represent language, how computers solve complex problems, and how you can draw realistic trees that will blow away your artistic friends. No experience required -- if you enjoy friendly mathematical banter and aesthetically pleasing diagrams, this class is for you!
